As a contract manufacturer and private label company, the most common type of label used in our industry is pressure sensitive labels. These labels are versatile and can be swapped out in the production line very quickly. This makes changing from one SKU to another simple, without slowing down the line for long periods.

It is best for these labels to come on large rolls with a cardboard core in the center. The rolls are inserted on the machines on the line and the labels are rolled onto the bottles during the application process. The dimensions of the core are very important and must correspond with the size of the label applicator. This is sometimes referred to as “ID” or inner dimension.
The “OD” or outer dimension is the overall width of the roll of labels. The number of labels per roll will vary based on the length of each individual label. A 12” OD is common because the heavy rolls are still manageable to move, ship, and load. The manufacturing equipment should be taken into consideration as well. We can help you select the best roll length for your particular application. The overall goal is to maximize manufacturer run time, reduce waste, and improve inventory management.
The direction in which labels are facing on the roll determines the unwind. The correct unwind is determined by the equipment in the line that will apply the labels. If the wrong unwind is used, the labels on your product would be applied upside down. There are four standard unwinds, and they are referred to as numbers. See image to clarify.
